Only 268 out of 31264 villages in Senegal were connected to the public grid in Senegal in the year of 1998. The government of Senegal was able to invest more than 20 billions F CFA in the electrification of the country in the following years. The number of electrified villages had risen to around 750 in the year of 2006.
To be able to fulfil the high existence of non-electrified villages faster, Senegal fathered an ambitious programme and divided the country into 18 concession districts which will be electrified by various parties and private investors in the next years. With the help of Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) - the German Energy Agency SOLAR23 applied for participating in the process of the electrification of the country with this indicative project.
The solar village “Ndelle” is to exemplify how alternative power engineering can sensibly be used for the electrification of Senegal for locations which are far away from the public grid. Thus, “Ndelle” is becoming a multiplier of solar energy for the entire concession districts of Senegal and even its neighbour countries.
