A solar project in Senegal that will exploit the rural electrification as a market gap

Electrical energy is rare in rural Senegal. The electricity grid does not extend far beyond the metropolitan areas along the coast. The nearly 900 residents of the remote village Ndelle had a reason for celebration: the location was chosen for an electrification pilot project. Since September 17, 2008, the small community that lives primarily from peanut cultivation has its own electricity supply from photovoltaic panels.

Independent from the power grid

Off-grid solar systems: the trend of the PV-industry is directed towards larger systems. In the regions with no electricity grid, the small off-grid solar systems are the best choice. The demand is huge, though the market for stand-alone systems is not yet on its course. Part of the problem are the subsidy and financing instruments for solar projects in rural areas.

Mediras-cover-thumbnail Membrane Distillation in Remote Areas

MEDIRAS is an R&D project funded by the European Commission through the 7th framework programme. Its overall objective is to optimise the innovative Membrane Distillation technology. Membrane distillation desalinates sea or brackish water and converts it to safe drinking water, powered by solar thermal energy or waste heat. The technology is particularly suitable for small distributed applications with capacity up to 20 m3/day. The project started on 1st September 2008 and will run for 3 years.
